Freshman Madison Hughes scored her first career goal and goalkeeper Katie Montgomery posted her second straight shutout as the Youngstown State women’s soccer team defeated Longwood, 1-0, on Sunday evening.

The Penguins improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2012. It also marks the first time in school history Youngstown State has opened a season with back-to-back shutouts.

After a scoreless first half,sophomore Katie Hackos found Hughes open and the freshman notched her the first goal of her college career at the 61:19 mark. The Penguins also outshot the Lancers, 8-5, in the second half after tallying just two in the first half. Junior Shannon Leghart and sophomores Courtney Lavin and Kyler Lum each posted two shots to lead the Penguins.

Montgomery faced 11 total shots and had one save.

The Penguins visit Army on Friday at 7 p.m.

Canfield selling football tickets

CANFIELD

Tickets for the Canfield at Louisville football game Friday at 7:30 p.m. are on sale in the Canfield High School athletic office weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Student tickets cost $4 and adult tickets cost $6.

Susice, Lunger win at Speedway

Ryan Susice, Dennis Lunger Jr. and Rocky Kugel were among Saturday’s winners at Sharon Speedway.

Other winners were Shawn Fawcett, Brandon Blackshear and Bill Fuchs.

Next weekend will feature a doubleheader of events. Friday will be another “Summer Jam & BBQ Series” featuring “Escape” a Journey Tribute Band along with “Ronnie V & Friends.” Gates open at 6 p.m. with entertainment from 7-11.

Saturday will be the final “Steel Valley Thunder” program of the season.

Lydia Ko won the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open for the third time and first as a professional Sunday, beating Stacy Lewis with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

The 18-year-old Ko finished with an even-par 72 to match Lewis at 12-under 276 at Vancouver Golf Club. Lewis, also a playoff loser this year in the ANA Inspiration, had a 67.

Ko won in 2012 at Vancouver Golf Club at 15 years, 4 months to become the LPGA Tour’s youngest winner and fifth amateur champion.

The New Zealander successfully defended her title in 2013, also as an amateur, in Edmonton, Alberta. She has three victories this year to push her career total to eight.

So Yeon Ryu, the winner last year at London Hunt in Ontario, tied for third with fellow South Korean player Sei Young Kim at 11 under..

Andrade wins Boeing Classic

SNOQUALMIE, Wash.

Billy Andrade won the Boeing Classic for his second Champions Tour victory and first in an individual event, overcoming trouble early in the final round for a one-stroke victory.

Andrade closed with a 1-over 73 to finish at 9-under 207 at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge.

He opened with rounds of 69 and 65 to take a three-stroke lead into the final round.

The 51-year-old Andrade teamed with Joe Duran to win the Legends of Golf in April for his first Champions Tour title. Andrade won four times on the PGA Tour.

Andrade never lost the lead and held off a large chase pack that included Bernhard Langer, Fred Couples and Mark O’Meara.

Langer was second after a 71. Couples (69), O’Meara (68), Guy Boros (68) and Fran Quinn (69) tied for third at 7 under.

Andrade made a triple bogey on the fourth hole and any thought of a runaway victory was put on hold.
