Authorities say speed was a factor in the crash that killed an off-duty Philadelphia police sergeant whose pickup truck struck a large tree.

Police said 32-year-old Sgt. Rafael Ali of the 39th police district was in the Roxborough neighborhood when his truck went onto the center median and hit the tree about 11:43 p.m. Saturday. He was extricated from the wreckage but died at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday at Einstein Medical Center.
