First Friday Club

Dr. Dianne Bergant will be the featured speaker when the First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown meets Sept. 3 at Antone’s Banquet Centre, 8578 Market St.

She is the Carroll Stuhlmueller Distinguished Professor of Biblical Studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. Her topic will be “The Earth is the Lord’s: Bible and Integrity of Creation.”

Weekend retreat

VILLA MARIA, PA.

Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will offer a weekend retreat “Walking with God in an Evolutionary Universe” with John Surette from Sept. 18-20.

This retreat will consider the modern universe story and the presence and activity of God within the story.

Surette is a member of New England Province of the Jesuits. He lives in a suburb of Chicago, where he is involved in Spiritearth, a center for spirituality, contemplation and justice for the Ecozoic age, and with The Well, an eco-spirituality center.

BTS prayer

CANFIELD

Canfield United Methodist Church, 27 S. Broad St., will offer a back-to-school prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at at the Gazebo on the Green.

All students, parents, school staff and community members from any of the local school districts are invited to attend the brief, informal prayer service. The gathering will be led by Rev. Susan Brown, pastor.

Tent crusade

The evangelist department ministry of Phillips Chapel Church of God in Christ, 3903 Jacobs Road, will sponsor a tent crusade for Christ from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 29. The crusade will continue at 11 a.m. Aug. 30.

Community prayer services are scheduled for 3 and 7 p.m. Aug. 31.

Anniversary event

YOUNGSTOWN

The Office of Pro-Life, Marriage and Family Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will sponsor the second wedding anniversary celebration this year to honor couples who are observing their 25th, 40th, 50th or over anniversaries in 2015.

The event will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Canton. Couples planning to attend should register at their parishes by Sept. 11. The celebration will include Mass, renewal of marriage vows, a personalized certificate for each couple, and a reception for the couples and their families. Couples are to contact their parish offices.
