Poland Athletic HOF to induct four members

POLAND

The Poland Athletic Hall of Fame will induct four new members prior to the Poland-Niles football game on Sept. 4.

This year’s inductees are Christine Notareschi (Class of 1994, softball, basketball), Holly (Naymick) Shuster (1994, softball), Howard “Butch” Seidel (1966, football, track) and Bob Richardson (1951, track, football, basketball).

There will be a tailgate party prior to the game, with all former coaches and inductees invited to attend.

Kline lifts Penguins to opening victory

LEXINGTON, VA.

Senior Karlee Kline scored a goal in the 30th minute as the Youngstown State women’s soccer team defeated VMI in Friday’s season opener.

Following a corner kick by Kyler Lum, Kline and sophomore Katie Hackos each had shots at the net but were denied each time. Kline recovered the ball after multple tips in the box and recorded her second career goal.

The Penguins outshot the Keydets, 13-4, and had six shots on goal to zero.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Montgomery recorded her second career shutout in the win.

Hackos led the Penguins with three total shots and two shots on goal.

The Penguins visit Longwood Sunday at 7 p.m.

YSU women’s soccer seeks ball girls

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State women’s soccer program seeks ball girls from local youth soccer groups (non-high school age) for this season at Farmers National Bank Field.

The Penguins have 11 home matches this season with the home opener against St. Mary’s (Calif.) on Aug. 30.

Six ball girls would be required for each game.

YSU establishes Schulick scholarship

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State athletic department has created the Schulick Family Scholarship.

The scholarship honors the Schulick Family, which includes Scott R. Schulick, sister Jill Schulick Hecker and brother-in-law Brian Hecker — all YSU graduates — and his parents, Robert & Joanne Schulick.

This scholarship will be awarded annually to a YSU football student-athlete who is a recognized leader among his peers and contributes positively in the community. Preference will be given to Penguins who hail from the Mahoning Valley.

Kung takes lead with birdie binge

COQUITLAM, British Columbia

Candie Kung birdied four of her final six holes Friday to match the course record with an 8-under 64 and take the second-round lead in the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open.

The 34-year-old Taiwanese player had an 11-under 133 total at Vancouver Golf Club. Playing the back nine first, she birdied the first two holes and eagled the par-5 13th. The four-time LPGA Tour winner added birdies on Nos. 4 and 6-8.

Two-time champion Lydia Ko and first-round leader Karine Icher of France were tied for second. The 18-year-old Ko had a 68, and Icher followed her opening 65 with a 70.

Ko won in 2012 at Vancouver Golf Club at 15 years, 4 months to become the LPGA Tour’s youngest winner and fifth amateur champion. The New Zealander successfully defended her title in 2013 as an amateur in Edmonton, Alberta.

Mize leads Couples in Boeing Classic

SNOQUALMIE, Wash.

Larry Mize birdied the par-5 18th hole for a 5-under 67 and a two-stroke lead over Fred Couples and four others Friday after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Boeing Classic.

The 56-year-old Mize had a bogey-free round at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge.
