Aretha Franklin plans nightclub

DETROIT

Aretha Franklin says she wants to open a Detroit entertainment venue that would include a nightclub and fine dining.

The Queen of Soul tells WWJ-AM in an interview broadcast Thursday that she’s “glad that Detroit came through the bankruptcy with flying colors.”

She says she loves how Detroit is enjoying a renaissance and that she’s “going to be part of that renaissance.”

The singer says the venue would include “a five-star nightclub for dining and dancing, the band, the whole nine yards,” as well as a museum.

Downtown Detroit has been a hotbed of redevelopment since the city emerged from Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection in December. Franklin says she’s found a potential location downtown, with details to be announced later.

‘Simpsons’ owner’s collection on block

NEW YORK

A pinball machine from “The Simpsons” and fun pinup art are among the items coming to auction from the collection of the show’s co-creator Sam Simon.

Sotheby’s announced Thursday that it will be selling Simon’s entire personal collection of memorabilia, fine art and other objects in a series of sales through the fall and next year. It’s valued between $7.7 million and $11.5 million.

Simon died from colon cancer March 8 in California at 59.

In addition, Sotheby’s will offer Simon’s memorabilia in a dedicated sale Oct. 22.

Those items include a circa 1990 “The Simpsons” pinball machine with a presale estimate of $1,000 to $2,000.
