CANFIELD

The Canfield school board hired a new teacher and discussed the impact of a ranking as one of the top 500 high schools in the country.

The board this week approved the hiring of Melissa Haug for the 2015-16 school year as a high-school language arts teacher. Her salary will be $36,431.

Haug replaced Kellie Brautigam at the high school, whose resignation is effective July 30. The board approved that resignation this week.

Superintendent Alex Geordan said Brautigam relocated to Denver, where family members live, and Haug comes to Canfield “with a couple years experience from the Austintown schools.”

Geordan said he and board members discussed Canfield High School being ranked number 332 in Newsweek’s America Top 500 High Schools.

He said after looking into the numbers, the district was in the top 20 in Ohio and in the top five of Northeast Ohio schools.

“We’re very pleased with those results,” Geordan said. “It’s because of the wonderful kids we have and the staff that works with them.”

He also said the theme for the 2015-16 school year in Canfield schools is “going from good to great to look to try and grow and improve in many spots.”
