An afternoon of food, games and school supplies being given away will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Tod Park. The event is organized by Ken MacPherson and Cindy Michael to remember the killings of Cindy’s daughter, Lena Cross, and her grandsons, Mason and Christian, in 2005 in Girard. Book bags filled with school supplies will be given away after 3 p.m.

Man faces charges in Boardman assault BOARDMAN

A man faces multiple charges after police said he assaulted his girlfriend. Anthony Morton II, 31, whose listed address is in Akron, is charged with assault, resisting arrest and obstructing official business after his arrest Thursday in the area of Prestwick Drive near Windsor Road and Midlothian Boulevard. Police also discovered that Morton had an active warrant for an assault charge from a July incident in which Morton is accused of punching someone at a Shadyside Drive apartment. He was taken to Mahoning County jail.

Dad arraigned in theft at woman’s Niles home

NILES

Malcolm Gilford, 29, of Orchard Drive, Warren, was arraigned Thursday in Niles Municipal Court on an aggravated burglary charge stemming from an Aug. 9 incident in which he’s accused of breaking into a woman’s home and assaulting her.

No plea was entered for him, and bond of $15,000 was set. Gilford was arrested on a warrant Wednesday and taken to the Trumbull County Jail.

Niles police said a woman reported Gilford broke into her apartment on Royal Mall Drive by breaking down the front door at 10:27 p.m., choked her and possibly injured her fingers. He took items from the apartment and fled, police said. Gilford is the father of the woman’s two children and last lived with her at the apartment in April, she told police.

Officer, son die in crash in Mercer County

MERCER, PA.

A Mercer County police officer and his son died in a two-vehicle crash Thursday. According to a report from 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, Pennsylvania State Police said 41-year-old Jeremiah Christner Sr., of Greenville, and his son, Jeremiah Christner Jr., 17, were in an SUV that went out of control at about 10 a.m. on Greenville-Sheakleyville Road in Salem Township and ran into an oncoming truck. Christner Sr., a member of the Greenville-West Salem Police department, was driving the SUV. According to the police report, Christner’s vehicle went out of control on a curve and spun around 90 degrees before being struck. The road surface was wet at the time of the crash. Two men in the truck were also injured. State police say the severity of their injuries was not known late Thursday.

Guilty pleas entered in assault, robbery

WARREN

Wayne E. Perry, 22, of Kenilworth Avenue Southeast, pleaded guilty Thursday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to charges that could land him in prison for more than 20 years. He pleaded guilty before Judge Ronald Rice to felonious assault, robbery and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He will be sentenced in about four weeks after an investigation by the county Adult Probation Department.

The charges stem from an incident on Kenilworth June 3 in which Perry was accused of firing a handgun at a car passing in front of Perry’s house, hitting the car in the lower driver’s door. No injuries were reported.

Cookout and carnival

Stambaugh Charter Academy and Mercy Community Church, 2420 Donald Ave., will sponsor a community cookout and carnival from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday with free food. Free book bags and school supplies will be given to the first 100 children. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Teachers ‘resolution’ reached in E. Liverpool

East Liverpool City School teachers have approved what their union is calling a “mutual resolution,” which paves the way for members to be in school for the first day of classes Monday. The East Liverpool Education Association announced Thursday that members approved the agreement worked out with the school board and a federal mediator earlier this week, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner. Upon reaching the tentative agreement on Tuesday, the union withdrew a 10-day strike notice that had been issued earlier. Teachers issued the strike notice in part because of the school board’s decision to implement a contract offer that the union had previously rejected. The terms of the agreement have not been made public. The school board is expected to vote on the resolution Monday.

Lawsuit over fatal crash

The family of a Youngstown man killed in a fiery car accident last Thanksgiving is now suing the trucking company and driver involved.

According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, Keith Rodgers Jr., the son of the deceased Keith Rodgers Sr., filed a $5 million wrongful-death lawsuit in Youngstown’s U.S. District Court earlier this week. Rodgers Sr., 52, died after the car in which he was traveling struck a large tractor-trailer and burst into flames. Two other Youngstown men, David Williams and Ronald Davis, were in the car at the time. Williams was killed; Davis was the vehicle’s sole survivor. The tractor-trailer involved in the crash was owned by Garred Transport Co. of Indiana. The rig was being driven by Myron Harbor of Smyrna, Ga. Rodgers’ suit alleges that Harbor stopped and parked his commercial vehicle in the middle of the northbound lane of Lansdowne Boulevard on the East Side the morning of Nov. 27, 2014. The suit also says Harbor’s truck was blocking the road.

Liberty resurfacing set through Wednesday

Township police are advising motorists to avoid sections of Tibbetts-Wick Road and Mansell Drive from now until Wednesday while the roads are being resurfaced. Tibbetts Wick between Logan Way and Warner Road and Mansell between Logan Way and Cardinal Drive should be used for local traffic only, police said.

BOE acts in Lowellville

LOWELLVILLE

Lowellville Board of Education appointed board member Lisa Donofrio as the district’s delegate to the annual business meeting of the Ohio School Boards Association on Nov. 9 in Columbus. The OSBA includes representatives from 715 school boards throughout Ohio.

Additionally, the board approved two five-year depository contracts between the district and local banks. The district will enter into agreements with Huntington National Bank and Farmers National Bank, beginning today and ending on Aug. 20, 2020. The board also authorized business credit cards with Farmers National Bank for four district employees.

Drug arrest results from traffic stop

STRUTHERS

A traffic stop Wednesday evening resulted in the arrest of a city man on a charge of possession of drugs. Police stopped Michael Gonzalez Jr., 25, at Fourth and Elm streets and found nine grams of suspected marijuana, according to a police report.

$25K fire loss reported in Warren

WARREN

A former one-story store at 235 Nevada Ave. SW was destroyed in an 2:55 a.m. arson Thursday. The building was a total loss of about $25,000, Warren Fire Chief Ken Nussle said. The building had been vacant for some time and had no working utilities, the chief said.
