Group files complaint against judge over marriage sentence

AUSTIN, Texas

A group that advocates the separation of church and state has filed a complaint about a Texas judge who ordered a man to marry his girlfriend as a condition of probation.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation said Friday it filed the complaint against Smith County Court-at-Law Judge Randall Rogers a day earlier with the Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct in Austin.

On July 2, Judge Rogers gave 21-year-old Josten Bundy 30 days to marry 19-year-old Elizabeth Jaynes or face 15 days in jail for pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault. Bundy admitted punching Jaynes’ ex-boyfriend twice in the jaw for “saying disrespectful things” about her. Judge Rogers also ordered Bundy to scrawl a Bible verse 25 times daily.

Judge Rogers didn’t return a message seeking comment. Bundy and Jaynes have since married.

Guinness: 26-year-old cat in Oregon is world’s oldest alive

SISTERS, Ore.

A 26-year-old cat in Oregon has been named the oldest living cat by Guinness World Records.

The cat named Corduroy is owned by a family in the central Oregon city of Sisters. His owner, Ashley Reed Okura, has had him since he was a kitten and she was 7.

It’s the second time Corduroy has claimed the title. He was first recognized last year until officials discovered another cat, Tiffany Two, which lived to be just over 27. Corduroy reclaimed the title after Tiffany Two’s death.

Okura told The Oregonian that Corduroy still is active and in good health, except for some kidney problems. He still hunts on the family’s 160-acre property.

For his birthday Aug. 1, Okura bought him a live white mouse from Petco and says he enjoyed it “right away.”

Cat video festival draws 13,000 to St. Paul baseball stadium

ST. PAUL, Minn.

St. Paul’s mayor threw out a ceremonial ball of yarn to mark the opening of an annual festival for cat videos that drew thousands of feline fanatics to a city stadium.

Mayor Chris Coleman said 13,000 people were at CHS Field on July 12 for the fourth Internet Cat Video Festival.

Videos played on the stadium’s large scoreboard as people watched from the stands and blankets in the outfield. Selections included clips of a cat startling a bear and a scene from “Jurassic Park” edited to include giant cats.

In previous years, the festival has taken place at the Walker Art Center and the Minnesota State Fair.
