Federer advances in Cincinnati

MASON

Roger Federer took a first step toward a seventh Cincinnati title on Tuesday night, beating Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4 in his opening match.

The Swiss star won the Western & Southern Open last year for his unprecedented sixth title at the longtime ATP Tour stop. He got a good start by easily handling the Spaniard, whom he has beaten in straight sets in all four of their matches.

On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams dropped out of the tournament. Sharapova is still bothered by an injured right leg, and Williams came down with a virus.

John Isner’s summer surge ended with an opening-round loss to friend and doubles partner Sam Querrey, leaving the top-ranked American with some things to work out before the U.S. Open. Querrey was steady throughout a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over the 11th-seeded Isner, the first upset on the men’s side.

Isner had won 11 of 13 matches on hard courts this summer,

Australia’s Coletta leads US Amateur

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill.

Australia’s Brett Coletta shot a 4-under 66 on Tuesday on Olympia Fields’ North Course to top the U.S. Amateur clubhouse leaderboard when the second-round of stroke-play qualifying was suspended for the day because of darkness.

Rain delayed the start for 90 minutes and 54 players were still on the course when play was suspended.

The 19-year-old Coletta had five birdies and a bogey to finish at 7-under 133.

“At home, everyone says this is the tournament to get into,” Coletta said. “This is the tournament to win. This is the biggest experience you’re going to get, and it’s hyped up to be what it is. So I’ve come here, and all the stands are up, all you guys out here, the TV cameras will be out tomorrow. This is a great experience for me, coming to play this event, and to play well is even better.”
