26th annual Community Cup events begin Friday

The 26th annual Youngstown Area Community Cup will host its August events from Friday through Sunday. All the weekend’s events are free.

On Friday, events will be at the Central YMCA, 17 N. Champion St., and will include a hot-shot basketball competition and four swimming races. The event continues Saturday with a golf scramble at Mill Creek Golf Course, 1 West Golf Drive, Boardman, and a bowling tournament at Camelot Lanes, 628 Boardman-Canfield Road, Boardman.

The final weekend event will be a volleyball tournament at the Central YMCA on Sunday; the Red Division will compete at 9 a.m., White Division at noon, and Blue Division at 2:30 p.m.

The Community Cup includes three divisions. Teams in the Red Division are the Mahoning County Children Services Board, Farmers National Bank, Mahoning County Educational Service Center, Mercy Health, MS Consultants and the YMCA Central and Davis branches.

White Division participants are Cohen & Company, Homes For Kids, Involta (formerly DRS), Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center and Meridian Community Care. Blue Division participants are the city of Youngstown, D&E Counseling Center, Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, The Rich Center for Autism, Zidian Group, America Makes, PNC Bank, Valley Care Health System, the Village Network and Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority.

The Community Cup is a program of the YMCA of Youngstown that has involved more than 80 businesses and organizations and thousands of employees participating in 18 athletic events.

The Community Cup aims to create an awareness of the importance of physical fitness for individuals and participating companies. Major sponsors for this year’s cup are Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Mercy Health.

The final day of the cup competition will be Sept. 12 in Mill Creek Park, with the winners in each division being awarded their trophy.
