AUSTINTOWN
The Austintown Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously rescinded the hiring of a middle-school girls basketball coach charged with three felony counts of child pornography.
The board had a special meeting at 4 p.m. to vote on rescinding the contract of Rex Bosley, 59, of Austintown.
The board hired him on a nonteaching supplemental contract in November 2014 to be the seventh-grade girls basketball coach. The board also rehired him in May as a coach.
The contract is rescinded effective Friday and not immediately, due to legal counsel from the district’s attorney.
The board met for about 20 minutes – and 15 minutes of that was in executive session with Austintown Detective Sgt. Kathy Dina, who handles juvenile cases at the township police department.
“From everything we know, this was just Internet-based child porn” and did not involve district students, said Vincent Colaluca, Austintown schools superintendent.
He further said the district has not received any phone calls from students or parents about Bosley.
He was arraigned in court here Monday on one count each of pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor, pandering obscenity involving a minor and illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance.
His bond was set at $9,000 cash or surety bond, with a condition of no contact with minors. Bosley bonded out of the Mahoning County jail about 8 p.m. Monday.
He was arrested after consenting to a search of his home last week. Authorities seized a laptop computer and cellphone from his home.
