DeMasi, Scrappers topple Crosscutters

Dominic DeMasi pitched four innings of scoreless relief to lead the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to a 7-2 victory over the Williamsport Crosscutters in a New York-Penn League game on Sunday at Susquehanna Bank Park.
DeMasi (2-0) gave up three hits without a walk, striking out one batter from the fifth inning through the eighth. Ryan Perez pitched around a single and two walks in the ninth. Brock Hartson started and gave up both runs (one earned) on four hits in the first four innings, striking out four and walking one.
Wil Castro hit a two-run single in the five-run fifth, helping Mahoning Valley take a 6-2 lead. Li-Jen Chu added a solo homer in the seventh for the Scrappers (25-29), who are five games back in the wild card standings with 21 games remaining.
Left fielder Jodd Carter had a single and scored twice, but also had two fielding errors.
Carlos Duran and Austin Bossart each had two hits for Williamsport (35-21).
Mahoning Valley returns to action on Wednesday at home against Batavia.
