City firefighters spend 15 hours on Uptown blaze

YOUNGSTOWN — Firefighters spent almost 15 hours battling a fire that damaged at least three vacant buildings on Market Street in the Uptown District.

Crews arrived at the fire about 3 a.m. Sunday morning and finished containing it shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday evening, Fire Chief John O’Neill, Jr. said.

Officials are still investigating the fire’s cause and whether it caused injuries, O’Neill said.

That fire was one of three blazes to vacant buildings reported between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

About 8 p.m. Saturday night, fire crews responded to a fire in a vacant home on Hickory Street on the East Side. The fire caused about $8,000 damage, O’Neill said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and there were no reports of injuries.

Several hours later, shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, firefighters went to Donald Avenue on the West Side and contained a fire that caused $10,000 damage, O’Neill said. There were no reports of injuries.

Officials are also investigating whether the three fires were related.
