Kill agrees to one-year contract extension
MINNEAPOLIS
Minnesota coach Jerry Kill has agreed to a one-year contract extension, through the 2019 season.
The deal was announced Friday by the university. Kill gets a $300,000 raise and now will make $2.5 million per season.
Kill starts his fifth year on the job with a 25-26 record that includes losses in three bowl games. They’ve finished 8-5 the last two seasons, though. Highlights of 2014 included their second win over Michigan since 1986, a second straight victory over Nebraska and a 5-3 Big Ten record that was their best since 2003.
If Kill leaves for another job before Feb. 15, he will owe the Gophers a $2.4 million buyout. That number goes down by $600,000 each season through 2019.
GEORGIA
No leader in Bulldogs’ quarterback battle
ATHENS, GA.
Georgia coach Mark Richt says “there’s no separation” in the quarterback race following the first scrimmage of the preseason.
Brice Ramsey, who was the backup to 2014 senior Hutson Mason, may be the favorite in the race that also includes Faton Bauta and Virginia transfer Greyson Lambert. Georgia says no statistics were kept in the scrimmage, which was closed to reporters.
Richt says the snaps were spread evenly between the quarterbacks. He says the second-team offensive line needs to improve.
The team’s annual picture day also was held Saturday where the big attraction was “Que,” the grandson of mascot Uga IX. Que is expected to be named the team’s new mascot this season.
MICHIGAN STATE
Former Spartans RB George Guerre dies at 91
BATH, MICH.
George Guerre, the 1940s Michigan State running back who spent a year at Michigan, has died. He was 91.
Michigan State said Friday that Guerre died of congestive heart failure Thursday at his home in Bath.
The 5-foot-5, 157-pound Guerre led the Spartans in rushing, total offense, all-purpose yards and punting for three straight seasons from 1946-48.
He ran for 1,721 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career, with six 100-yard rushing games. His average of 6.75 yards per carry is the best in school history. Guerre accounted for six other scores — throwing five TD passes and catching one.
Guerre attended Michigan in 1942 before serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he was a navigator on B-17 missions over Italy and Africa.
BAYLOR
Bears officials say they weren’t trolling TCU
WACO, TEXAS
Baylor officials insist it is a fluke that Nos. 61 and 58 are side-by-side in the Bears’ new football team photo.
TCU fans may find that hard to believe after the Frogs’ 61-58 loss at Baylor last season.
In the front row of the Bears’ photo taken this week are two senior offensive linemen, No. 61 Jarell Broxton and No. 58 Spencer Drango. They are in that order with coach Art Briles close behind them.
Baylor spokesman Heath Nielsen says Nos. 61 and 58 being beside each other is just a “weird coincidence.”
Nielsen says players were sorted by class. Seniors were on the front rows with Briles, then sorted by height by the out-of-town photographer doing the shoot.
UCLA
Snoop Dogg’s son won’t play college football
LOS ANGELES
UCLA wide receiver Cordell Broadus, the son of rapper Snoop Dogg, is giving up football to concentrate on pursuing a career in film production.
Broadus is an incoming freshman who signed with the Bruins in February after playing for Las Vegas high school powerhouse Bishop Gorman. He did not report to preseason camp with the football team.
UCLA coach Jim Mora confirmed in a statement Friday that Broadus had decided to stop playing but will continue to attend UCLA.
