4 questioned after moviegoers scared with leaf blower
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.
Newport Beach police have questioned four people in connection with a scare at a movie theater that occurred when someone started a leaf blower that many mistook for a chainsaw.
The Orange County Register reported Wednesday that no arrests have been made but the four are cooperating with investigators. Police say they turned themselves in for questioning after surveillance photos were released.
Investigators previously had described the people in the photos as 15 to 20 years old. Police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said detectives are not treating the incident as a harmless prank.
Three people had minor injuries in the panicked rush to get out of the theater during the showing of “The Gift” on Sunday night. Police responded to multiple 911 calls.
The suspects fled through an emergency exit.
Pennsylvania country clubs report golf shoe scams to police
MCMURRAY, Pa.
Two southwestern Pennsylvania country clubs are reporting attempted scams involving golf shoes.
Peters Township police told the (Washington) Observer-Reporter that a man came to the Rolling Hills Country Club on Aug. 5 with a pair of shoes he claimed to have won in a contest. The man said he wanted to return the shoes, left them behind the counter, and said his wife would be in later to collect a refund.
Pro-shop workers later discovered the shoes had been removed from a display in the store. The man never returned.
Officials at Lone Pines Country Club in Washington said a man with a similar appearance did something similar Aug. 4, but instead claimed the shoes belonged to a dead relative. When he called back to get the shoes credited to his Visa card, they refused.
