Diabetes Partnership of the Mahoning Valley meeting

There will be a meeting of the Diabetes Partnership of the Mahoning Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 17 at Stonebridge Grille and Tavern. They will be getting ready for and discussing upcoming events, including the Canfield Fair, which will take place Sept. 2-7. In addition, the Ankle and Foot Care Centers 17th annual Golf Outing to take place on Sept. 18. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for Aug. 17

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be Aug. 17 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , located at 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” the two-hour sessions include a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ The fee is $10 per class, which includes $5 in Peaberry Bucks for that night only. Newcomers Club to meet

The Newcomers Club of Canfield has announced the officers for the 2015-2016 year: President - Betty Popa-Schuld, First Vice President - Sara Dysert, Second Vice President - Karen Morvay, Secretary - Rose Bissett, Treasurer - Julie VanDevender, Publicity - Sherrie Jacobs and Basket Raffle Chair - Diane Durrant. Upcoming meetings will include a September potluck, October Witches Wine Fest. and a November Holiday Decorating Ideas. The purpose of the Newcomers Club of Canfield is to provide an opportunity for members of the community in and around Canfield to develop friendships, welcome newcomers and to help support the civic, social and charitable life of the community. It is further formed to engage in recreational and social activities in support of these purposes. The meetings are take place on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise announced. The Newcomers Club of Canfield is open to all women of the Mahoning Valley.

TQGIBT to meet Aug. 18

Canfield’s Fair Park will be the meeting place for That Quilt Group I Belong To (TQGIBT) on Aug. 18. Clare Neff of Village Quilts will present a demonstration on the variety of quilted items – from bed quilts to throws to table runners – that can be made using the X-Blocks template. Doors open at 1 p.m., with the opportunity to work on a project of your choice until 5 p.m. Members gather again at Fair Park at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting beginning at 7 p.m.. Anyone interested is welcome to join. TQGIBT is open to all quilters in the Mahoning Valley, at all skill levels. Meetings usually take place at Fair Park on the third Tuesday of each month, with some exceptions. Dairy Queen stores raise funds

The Dairy Queen Stores in Cornersburg (3555 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown), Austintown DQ (146 N. Canfield Niles Road) and Columbiana DQ (241 E. Park Ave) all operated by the Smith family of Canfield raised $8,464 during the 10th Annual DQ Æ Miracle Treat Day to support Akron Children’s Hospital, the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals). On Miracle Treat Day, these DQ stores donated $1 or more from every Blizzard Æ Treat sold to Akron Children’s Hospital. Throughout the year, the restaurant raises funds for the for Akron Children’s Hospital, Boardman campus through a variety of initiatives including free cone day, a Bucks for Buckets campaign, Miracle Treat Day, the Radiothon and other events, as well. CMN Hospitals is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals. Since 1984, the Dairy Queen system has raised more than $100 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in local communities.

The Gathering Place

Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will host a Gathering Place event on Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. The program will feature Jeanette and Press Hess, who will discuss their organization, Seniors Helping Seniors. Lunch will be provided by The Woodlands at Hampton Woods. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that takes place on the second Monday of every month. Different games and activities are offered at each meeting.

Service changes at Lord of Life

Going forward, there will be a change in Sunday worship service at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield. Worship with Holy Communion service will start at 10:15 a.m. as of Sept. 13. Child care will continue to be provided at 10:15 a.m. Sunday school for preschool through grade 6 will take place for half an hour, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 10 a.m. On Sept. 13, the church will celebrate Rally Day, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for all ages. Rally Day is a celebration of Bible and faith exploration opportunities for all ages. Saturday worship service will remain at 5 p.m.

Back-to-school

The beginning of the 2015-2016 school year is just around the corner and Neighbors wants to feature your back-to-school moments! The deadline for picture submission is Sept. 4.

Annual Polish Heritage Festival

In preparation for its seventh annual Polish Day on Aug. 30 from 10:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. at St. Luke Church and Hall on South Avenue in Boardman, organizers are seeking marketplace vendors of all types who are seeking to reach their enthusiastic, shopping attendees. PolishYoungstown has vending space for 10 marketplace vendors, who will offer any variety of information and merchandise for our patrons during the festival. Authentic ethnic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors are especially requested, but all interested groups are welcome. The deadline for vendors is Aug. 7. CHS to host fundraiser

The Canfield High School Meet the Team and Steak Fry fundraiser, provided by The Canfield Gridiron, will take place on Aug. 15 from 12-6 p.m. Dinner included steak, potato, corn, bread, salad and dessert for $18. All proceeds go to the players and cheerleaders over the season. The event will also boast a Chinese Auction, 50/50 Raffle and spirit wear sales will be available. Walk-ins are welcome.

Gant receives scholarship

Stephen Gant, of Canfield, received a full tuition Scholarship and the Provost Scholarship to attend The Ohio State University this fall. He won the Valentino Physics Academic Scholarship, awarded to one person each year at the Ohio State. Gant plans to major in Physics while studying at OSU in Columbus this Fall. He graduated in the top 10 of his class at Canfield High School, ran for the cross country team and was president of the Canfield speech and debate team in his senior year.

The National Buddy Walk Program

The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley 2015 Buddy Walk is one of more than 250 Buddy Walk events planned in cities across the country and around the world this fall in and around October in celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month. The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society to promote acceptance and inclusion of all people with Down syndrome. Prayer at the Gazebo

Due to enthusiastic response, Canfield United Methodist Church invites you to gather each Wednesday at noon at the Gazebo on the Green for a time of public prayer. This gathering is open to the public and will include a short reading from the Psalms and the lifting of prayer concerns for the community, the country and the world, as well as personal joys and concerns. August sale

Helping Hands Closet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, has new and gently used clothes for the family. In August, they will sell items for $1 for each item, except holiday and wedding attire, which will be 75 percent off. Store hours are 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Family story time

Join the MetroParks Farm library for stories and fun for children of all ages every Wednesday in August at 10 a.m. Parents are invited to join their children in this 30-minute program.

Blood pressure check

There will be a blood pressure check with the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association on Aug. 18 from 1-2 p.m. at the MetroParks Farm library.

Baird named to Honor Roll

The Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (ECOT) -Ohio’s largest charter school- announced recently that 331 students were named to the school’s latest Honor Roll for middle school. Students ending each semester with a 3.0 GPA or above will be named to the Honor Roll. The only student in Mahoning County to achieve this distinction was Mark Baird, Jr. from Canfield.

Volunteers needed for Polish-American Heritage Day festival

In preparation for its seventh annual Polish Day on Aug. 30 from 10:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. at St. Luke Church and Hall on South Avenue in Boardman, organizers are inviting the public to help make the event happen. Volunteers of every age, skill and ability are welcome. Help is needed for everything from set up and take down to ticket sales, helping with the pierogi contests and assisting in cultural display and children’s areas. Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1 1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Recruitment and team registration taking place

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is inviting Mahoning and Columbiana County area residents to form teams and register to participate in the Mahoning Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 10 at the Watson Tressel Training Site at Youngstown State University, located at 651 Elm Street in Youngstown. The Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support, education and research. Check in is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place annually in more than 700 communities. The event is an inspiring and meaningful experience that calls on participants of all ages to share their collective voice as an advocate, walk in honor of their loved ones and help raise awareness of programs and services available to families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, there will be refreshments, basket drawings, a children’s corner and entertainment, as well as other activities.

Boardman Park hosts free concerts

It’s time to pack up your blankets and lawn chairs and head out to Boardman Park’s Maag Outdoor Theatre for some local entertainment at Music in the Park. All concerts, except for the Military Bands will be on Thursday evening’s beginning at 7 p.m. All concerts are free to the public thanks to the sponsorships of Talmer Bank-Premier Sponsor, The American Federation of Musicians Local #86-242, Southwoods Health and Hill, and Barth and King, LLC. The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, has announced its 2015 Guided Labyrinth Walk schedule. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. The walk schedule is: Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. - Celebrating Peace; and Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. - Celebrating the Feast of St. Francis, Showing Solidarity with the Poor.
