Third week test results show higher levels of E. coli in Mill Creek, Lake Newport
YOUNGSTOWN — E. coli bacteria levels in Mill Creek and Lake Newport were higher than in the previous two rounds of testing, according to results released today by the Mahoning County District Board of Health.
Three water samples collected at the Lake Newport boathouse determined E. coli counts of 162, 160 and 179 per 100 milliliters of water. Samples taken near a foot bridge over Mill Creek south of Shields Road measured counts of 727, 548 and 435. E. coli counts from samples taken near Lake Newport’s boat launch were 115, 115 and 127.
Water with E. coli-count levels of 576 and above is considered a potential public health risk, according to the Ohio EPA.
“The testing of Lake Newport is still in the beginning stages and it’s too early to make any significant correlations with the data. However, the third samples were drawn when weather conditions were slightly different than the previous samples. There was minimal rainfall, cooler temperatures and periods of less sun,” said Ryan Tekac, environmental health director for the county health board in a release.
The health board initiated a 12-week testing program after an earlier test determined that there were elevated E. coli levels in park waterways, which park staff closed to the public on July 10 until further notice.
