Poland trustees seek grant money for sidewalks
POLAND
Township officials intend to seek funding to add sidewalks along two stretches of road.
Trustees will apply for grant funding through Eastgate Regional Council of Governments to build sidewalks on Dobbins Road from state Route 170 to the Tuscany development, and on 170 from Dobbins to Spitler Road.
If the township gets grant money, it would have to pay 20 percent of the project cost. The estimated cost to the township for both projects is between $40,000 and $60,000, according to Trustee Robert Lidle, who brought up the topic at a meeting Wednesday.
The proposals come after the township succeeded last year in getting state grant money to cover the entire cost of building a sidewalk along 170 from Nesbitt Street to Dobbins.
In other business, the board heard from a local 12-year-old who brought to them a proposal to add autism-awareness signs in her neighborhood to enhance safety for two children with autism who live near her Saginaw Drive home.
“Hopefully you will agree to help me help my friends,” said Brianna DiFabio, a proposal which the board accepted.
Trustees also heard a lengthy dispute among residents who live on or near Cliffview and Camella drives regarding construction of a fence by a resident of Cliffview.
Several residents spoke in opposition to the fence, while the property owners defended it.
Township officials emphasized that because the property owner is not breaking any laws, there is nothing they can do about it.
Trustees also approved appropriations of $4,500 for equipment for a new police car and up to $2,000 for a buyback program to replace the police department’s supply of guns.
