Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

Pabstolutely, the annual hard-rocking outdoor music festival at the Royal Oaks bar, will return for its eighth year Saturday – a month sooner than usual and a week after the East Side bar reopened after its “Bar Rescue” makeover.

Lansing Avenue, which runs alongside the Oaks, will be closed to traffic so that a stage can be set up.

A dozen acts – including headliner Coinmonster – will perform, beginning at 12:30 p.m. and wrapping up at midnight or so.

Admission is $5. All proceeds (plus a dollar from each beer sold) will benefit Golden String, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides recreational activities to adults and children with special needs in surrounding communities. Golden String is dedicated to enhancing the lives of the disabled through activities such as holiday parties, local sporting events, dances, weekend trips, camping and more.

Vendor booths will include Touch the Moon Candy Saloon, Artistic Dermagraphics, Paw Platoon Dog Rescue, Rusty Waters Apparel, Beard Oil by Tony Mentzer, Electric Bunny Designs by Co77in, Amplified Arts and many more.

Food by Royal Oaks will be sold outdoors.

The Oaks was all over the news last week because a crew from Spike TV’s docu-reality series “Bar Rescue” filmed a future episode at the bar.

Pabstolutely, the biggest day of the year at the Oaks, is usually held in September but was moved to mid-August this year. The decision was made long before the “Bar Rescue” visit was even known, according to festival organizer Joe Stilson.

The timing is fortuitous, because interest in the bar is at a high point because of the show.

It could mean a boost in attendance.

“I always hope that attendance improves every year,” said Stilson, who is a stalwart regular at the Oaks. “If I didn’t have hope for my ‘home away from home’ family, I wouldn’t do any of it.”

The makeover of the bar has changed its famously offbeat interior, and took some getting used to for regulars. But Stilson said he strongly supports owners Lou and John Kennedy. “They are my brothers and sisters,” he said of the Oaks family. “Loyal to the Royal.”
