Special meeting
NEW SPRINGFIELD
A proposed Mahoning Landfill host agreement will be discussed at a 6 p.m. special meeting today in the Springfield Township hall.
The trustees will have their regular meeting at 7 p.m.
Lou Vega, county recycling director, declined to reveal terms of the agreement Tuesday, but he said it would need the approval of both the township trustees and the Mahoning County commissioners. The landfill has been operating since 1986, and this would be its first host agreement, Vega said.
Poland Township has a host agreement with its Carbon-Limestone Landfill, in which the landfill funds the purchase of emergency vehicles and maintenance of roads used to haul waste to the landfill, Vega said.
Police arrest man with loaded gun
YOUNGSTOWN
Police arrested a man about 4:15 a.m. Tuesday who had a loaded handgun and gave them two fake names.
Officers were at an accident at Burbank and Ashley avenues on the West Side when reports said Marc Ellington, 32, of Eddie Street, approached a car that was involved, wanting a set of keys in it. One of the doors to the car was open slightly and the keys were missing from the ignition.
Reports said Ellington denied taking the keys and told police they could search him. When they did, they found a loaded 9 mm handgun and the keys in one of his pockets.
Ellington also gave police two false names, and when they learned his real name, a records check revealed he had a warrant from municipal court for several traffic cases. He was taken to the Mahoning County jail on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing official business.
Firefighters called to home twice
YOUNGSTOWN
Reports said firefighters were called to a vacant 55 S. Osborn Ave. home on the West Side twice late Monday and early Tuesday.
In the first call, firefighters arrived about 11:20 p.m. and found the back door open with light smoke coming from the side. Reports said a fire was found under a window in the dining room. Damage was listed at $2,000.
Reports said there was a for-sale sign in the front yard and firefighters called the homeowner, who told them a woman moved out of the house two months ago and took the keys, so he left the back door unlocked. He did not have insurance.
Crews were called back to the home about 12:20 a.m. and found a heavier fire this time, and the back door was kicked in. Reports said firefighters locked that door when they left about midnight. Damage is listed at $5,000 in the second blaze. No one was injured.
