Kipnis could return during Boston series
CLEVELAND
All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis is doing well in his rehab and could return to the Indians during its upcoming road trip.
Kipnis, a former Mahoning Valley Scrapper, went on the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 3 with right shoulder inflammation, though it was retroactive to Aug. 2. The Indians, following their three-game homestand against the New York Yankees, travel to Minnesota, Boston and New York. It’s in the middle portion of that trip against the Red Sox that Kipnis could be activated.
Serena Williams wins easily in Toronto
TORONTO
Top-ranked Serena Williams rebounded to beat Italy’s Flavia Pennetta 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 on Tuesday in the second round of the WTA Tour’s Rogers Cup.
“I was really frustrated with how I was playing,” Williams said. “And then I got really angry. ... So I said, ‘Serena, you’re going to have to be positive and be good to yourself out here.”’
The 21-time Grand Slam winner won a day after sister Venus Williams was eliminated in straight sets by Germany’s Sabine Lisicki.
The 33-year-old Williams blamed unforced errors for her early struggles.
“It was a good opportunity for me because I haven’t played a match on hard courts since April-ish, early, early April, after Miami,” Williams said. “It was a long time ago. So I think it was really good for me to have that match play.”
Williams won the first of her three Toronto titles in 2001.
Yin, Hahn share medalist honors
PORTLAND, Ore.
Angel Yin shot a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to share medalist honors with Jennifer Hahn in the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Portland Golf Club.
The 16-year-old Yin, from Arcadia, California, had seven birdies and two bogeys to match Hahn at 6-under 138. Yin lost to Eun Jeong Seong last month in the U.S. Girls’ Junior final in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The 21-year Hahn, from Henderson, Nevada, had a 70. She’ll be a senior at Vanderbilt.
Yin and Hahn topped the 64 qualifiers for match play.
Nelly Korda of Bradenton, Florida, shot a 66 — the best round of the week — to tie for third with Australia’s Hannah Green at 5 under. The 17-year-old Korda, sister of LPGA Tour player Jessica Korda and daughter of former tennis player Petr Korda, birdied eight of the first 14 holes.
The 18-year-old Green had a 68.
Little League cites fraud, cover-up
CHICAGO
Court documents filed by Little League International contend Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West baseball team was stripped of its national championship because of “fraud and cover-up.”
Little League filed the documents last week in response to a lawsuit by Jackie Robinson West seeking documentation for why the league took the action.
At the time the lawsuit was filed in June, Jackie Robinson West attorney Victor Henderson said he believed some of what Little League International claimed — that some of the players did not live within local league boundaries.
But he added that he thought the team was unfairly singled out for scrutiny, in part, because all of its players are black.
