Teen convicted in Ohio mall shooting gets 2 years in prison

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A teenager accused of trying to steal Nike sneakers from a mall shopper who fatally shot another teen with him has been sentenced to two years in prison on reckless homicide and grand-theft convictions.

The 17-year-old was sentenced today on his adult convictions involving a Dec. 20 fatal shooting outside the Dayton Mall.

Defense attorney L. Patrick Mulligan had asked for community control instead of prison. He said the teen didn’t have a gun or cause the death and had no prior record.

Police said three boys accosted two shoppers leaving the mall after buying a new version of popular Air Jordan shoes on sale that day. Authorities say the 16-year-old showed a gun and was fatally shot by a shopper who had a concealed weapon permit.
