On July 25 the Boardman library hosted a monthly Sensory Storytime for children with special needs.
Librarian Ashley Potopovich was substituting for the story time’s usual teacher, Allison Graf.
Potopovich said Graf did a lot of the events for children at the library.
“She’s awesome,” Potopovich said.
Potopovich has her undergraduate degree in teaching which made her perfect for the position to help with Sensory Storytime.
Sensory Storytime was started by one of the former librarians who had her degree in Special Education and has been continued by other librarians over the last three years.
Children get to make crafts, listen to music, read stories, play with bubbles, play games with the parachute and participate in a variety of other interactive, hands-on activities.
“The parachute is always fun,” Potopovich said. “After story time there are different stations they can go to. The craft table is always popular.”
Potopovich said she especially likes the music and the crafts they do – the hands-on activities contribute to the sensory part of Sensory Storytime.
Sensory Storytime is a registered class and takes place the last Saturday of every month at the Boardman library and lasts for the duration of an hour.
