For Stefan Fiutowski, the math is simple: Bars plus weapons equals jail.
Fiutowski, 27, of Rockdale Avenue in Boardman, was sentenced to 90 days in the Mahoning County jail Thursday with credit for 55 days served and five years’ probation.
He pleaded guilty June 15 before Judge Shirley Christian in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to charges of possession of a firearm in a liquor establishment, carrying a concealed weapon and assault.
Assistant Prosecutor Mary Beth DiGravio said that the charges come from a Feb. 21 arrest at a 1305 Youngstown-Poland Road bar in Boardman. DiGravio said that a bartender tried to stop Fiutowski from drinking, and when he made a scene, two patrons tried to calm him down.
Reports said Fiutowski pulled a knife and punched and bit one of the patrons. When police arrived, they found the knife and a gun Fiutowski had in a lockbox in a backpack he had with him.
As part of the plea agreement, Fiutowski will serve the 90 days in jail, but he gets credit for 53 days since he entered into the plea June 15.
His lawyer. Jeffrey Limbian, asked Judge Christian to abide by the plea agreement. Limbian said his client needs help with substance-abuse and mental-health issues which he can receive when he is on probation after the jail sentence is up.
“His downfall is, he cannot consume alcohol,” Limbian said of his client.
Fiutowski apologized and said he wants to get help for his drinking.
“I do need to stay away from drinking,” Fiutowski said.
Fiutowski said the last time he tried to get help for his drinking was two years ago.
Judge Christian said weapons, especially guns in bars, are never a good mix.
