Man killed after trench collapses

Man killed after trench collapses

CLEVELAND

Authorities say an employee for a Northeast Ohio township has died after a 10-foot-deep trench collapsed on top of him.

Federal and local officials say the man and another worker were in the trench that hadn’t been reinforced as safety rules require when one side collapsed.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating. An OSHA spokeswoman says trenches over 6 feet in depth are required to be reinforced.

The employee has been identified as 54-year-old Thomas Evers of Parkman Township. Authorities say Evers and another Parkman Township employee were inside the trench Tuesday working on a culvert.

A Geauga County Sheriff’s Office spokesman says the other township employee wasn’t hurt.

Parkman Township is about 40 miles southeast of Cleveland.

4 police officers charged with abuse

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.

Four Southern California police officers have been arrested on suspicion of child cruelty for allegedly abusing youngsters at a boot camp.

Two Huntington Park officers and two from the South Gate force were arrested this week by deputies from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, which says they were released on bail.

Messages seeking comment from the officers weren’t immediately returned Wednesday.

The investigation involved allegations that children were cut, bruised and beaten bloody in May during a boot camp for troubled youths that the two police departments ran in San Luis Obispo.

Investigators identified 13 alleged victims ranging from 12 to 17 years old.
