LISBON
The Columbiana County Educational Service Center will provide substitute-teacher training from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 and Jan. 13 at the center. The cost is $15 and must be sent to the center, 38720 Saltwell Road, Lisbon 44432, Attn: Paula Lipke.
The training is for those who have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university who are interested in substitute training. It will cover the information needed to substitute teach within the CCESC school districts.
Poland council to meet
POLAND
The Poland Village Council will have a meeting at 6 p.m. today at village hall, 308 S. Main St., to discuss the Poland Municipal Forest.
Charged with assault
HUBBARD
Police arrested Brian Puccio, 39, of Hubbard on an assault charge. According to police, witnesses said Puccio pushed a 46-year-old woman over a bannister outside an apartment complex on Youngstown-Hubbard Road and then choked her. Puccio will be arraigned next Tuesday in Girard Municipal Court.
Robbery charge
CAMPBELL
Police arrested Anthony White, 23, of Campbell on Sunday on an aggravated robbery charge.
A police report says White brandished a handgun and took three boxes of cigarettes of an estimated $150 value from Blaze Oil gas station on McCartney Road. White will be arraigned today in Campbell Municipal Court.
Theft reported
BOARDMAN
Township police are investigating the reported theft of $7,700 worth of items from a Market Street jewelry store.
Police responded to Tele-Gold Jewelers, 8051 Market St., late Sunday after alarms sounded.
Missing items include a $3,000 sterling silver bracelet as well as watches, a diamond ring, diamond pendant, gold cross and heart-shaped sterling silver ring.
Video surveillance reportedly shows two men approach the store and then one enter, open cases and put items in a bag.
Competency evaluation
YOUNGSTOWN
A man set to go on trial a second time on charges that he murdered another man in March 2012 after they argued about stolen electricity will have a competency evaluation.
Judge Maureen Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court ordered the evaluation Monday for Michael Paige, 23, of Bennington Avenue.
Paige is charged with murder in the March 1, 2012, death of Munir Blake, 31, inside a building in the 200 block of Lora Avenue as the two argued over a theft of electricity.
A jury in March 2014 found Paige not guilty of aggravated murder, but could not reach a verdict on lesser charges of murder, voluntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence.
Paige is in the Mahoning County jail.
Drug charges
BOARDMAN
A Canfield man faces a felony drug charge after a traffic stop on Market Street near Midlothian Boulevard on Sunday.
Robert Hayden, 23, of Carriage Lane, is charged with possession of heroin, a fifth-degree felony, and misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana, drug-abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia.
The driver of the vehicle, Brett Liller, 20, of Boardman, was cited for driving under suspension.
Hayden is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
Gunshots reported
WARREN
A man, 34, reported that another man fired four to seven gunshots in his direction as he stood in his driveway on Comstock Street Northeast at 2:20 a.m. Sunday.
The victim said there were three to four males inside the car, which belongs to his ex-wife. Police found three shell casings in the area.
Police said it appears that the gunfire is related to two incidents on Blair Avenue Northwest in which a woman’s house and and a vehicle parked there were vandalized.
Road closings
WARREN
High and East Market streets at Mahoning and North Park avenues, and Mahoning at High and East Market streets will be closed from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 9 a.m. Monday for the Italian American Festival.
National Night Out
NEW MIDDLETOWN
New Middletown will host a “National Night Out” event today. A parade in observance of National Night Out will form at 5:30 p.m. and step off at 6:30 at Springfield High School on state Route 170 and end at St. Paul’s Church on Main Street. Food, music and more will be offered at Springfield Elementary School from 7 to 9:30 p.m., and there will be fireworks at 10.
Austintown activity
AUSTINTOWN
Austintown Night Out activities will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. today at Austintown Township Park, 6000 Kirk Road.
There will be new games for the children, and prizes for everyone. The Disney princesses Queen Elsa and Anna and Cinderella will be there, and there will be a demonstration by a police canine unit. New this year also will be the SWAT Armored Vehicle and Ohio State Highway Patrol vehicle on display. There will be face painting, balloons, a clown, bounce house and giant slide.
Music/MC by Melton Entertainment and the band Uptown Saturday Night. There will be food available for purchase, and, weather permitting, some classic cars.
Domestic violence
LIBERTY
Police arrested Anthony Blackwell, 30, of Warren on Sunday at Fairlawn Avenue on charges of domestic violence, felonious assault and violating a protection order.
A 27- year-old woman, who is pregnant, told police Blackwell hit her in the face, kicked her in the lower abdomen and legs, head-butted her and choked her, a police report states. Blackwell also told police he had hit the woman multiple times, the report states.
A judge entered pleas of not guilty for all felony charges at Blackwell’s arraignment Monday in Girard Municipal Court. His preliminary hearing is Wednesday.
Pleads not guilty
GIRARD
Rodney Wasmund, 21, of Youngstown entered a not-guilty plea to a charge of domestic violence at his arraignment Monday in Girard Municipal Court. Police arrested Wasmund, 21, of Youngstown on Sunday at Green Acres Drive. An 18-year-old woman, who is pregnant, told police that Wasmund punched her all over her body, a police report states.
Burglary probed
POLAND
Township police are investigating a reported burglary from a Read Street home. Missing items include a semiautomatic pistol and a shotgun.
The victim told Hubbard city police he had found the stolen shotgun at Clayton Consignment on North Main Street in Hubbard on Friday. The gun did not have a serial number, but the owner was able to provide details about the weapon, the report states.
Documents show the person who sold the shotgun to Clayton Consignment also sold the shop two other guns. Neither of those guns was the handgun reported stolen.
Drug charges
LIBERTY
A traffic stop Sunday led to the arrest of a Youngstown man on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and drug-abuse instruments.
According to a police report, officers stopped Martina Lapolla, 28, on Northgate Avenue on a traffic violation. Officers found in the vehicle syringes, cooking spoons, a suspected snorting straw, torn plastic bags and a razor blade. Lapolla will be arraigned today in Girard Municipal Court.
Water-main break
WARREN
A water-main break at the main branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW, caused that branch to close at 3:30 p.m. Monday. The library hopes to reopen at 9 a.m. today, according to its website.
