Police still searching for teenage suspect

Police are still searching for 15-year-old James Johnson, who is a suspect in the death of Jarrell Brown, 18, about 10:15 p.m. July 26 at Market Street and West Indianola Avenue on the South Side.

Another suspect, Brayquan Walker, 16, was arrested Thursday and is awaiting court proceedings in the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.

Police said Brown was shot somewhere near the intersection, then walked there and collapsed.

Johnson is described as a black male, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 145 pounds with large, distinctive hair.

Land-deed scam

Noralynn Palermo, Mahoning County recorder, is once again reminding local residents they need not pay large fees to private companies for copies of their land deeds.

The charge is 10 cents a page for copies made by the public in the recorder’s office in the county courthouse. For certified copies, the charge is $2 a page, plus $1 for the certification stamp. Most deeds are two pages. A California company is mailing letters to local residents offering deed copies for $83.

Meetings canceled

The meet-and-greet sessions with Community Police Officers scheduled this week for the city’s 4th, 5th 6th and 7th wards are canceled. They will be rescheduled at a later date and time. For information, contact the community police department office by calling 330-793-6650.

Fires destroy houses

YOUNGSTOWN

Firefighters battled two blazes at East Side homes over the weekend.

Crews were called to a 2036 Atkinson Ave. home about 3:10 a.m. Sunday to a home that was fully engulfed in flames. Reports said shortly after firefighters arrived, the roof collapsed, and they learned the homeowners were out of town.

A cause has not yet been determined. Damage is listed at $17,000.

About 2:25 a.m. Saturday, crews were called to a vacant home at 228 S. Garland Ave. that also was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Firefighters went into defensive mode instead to protect surrounding homes, reports said.

Damage is listed at $5,000. A cause has not yet been determined.

There were no injuries in either blaze.

Deals for Wheels

YOUNGSTOWN

Child-support debtors can get their driver’s licenses reinstated this month by paying one month’s support, plus $1, and agreeing to seek employment, if they’re not working.

The “Deals for Your Wheels” program is being offered by the Mahoning County Child Support Enforcement Agency, Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave., where office hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles also charges a $25 reinstatement fee.
