Blue-green algae alert at Shenango Lake elevated to a caution level
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. — The blue-green algae alert at Shenango Lake has been elevated to a caution level at the marina in Clark, Chestnut Run Swim Beach and Shenango Campground Boat Launch, with the rest of the lake remaining at the advisory level, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today.
The lake’s algae bloom, which was announced by the corps last week, could harm people and pets coming into contact with it, the corps warned.
This bloom is dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa, which is more likely to produce toxins than other species.
Blue-green algae can cause allergic reactions and skin irritations, and, in severe cases, liver or nervous system damage.
