ValleyCats pounce on Scrappers

The Tri-City ValleyCats walloped Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ pitching on Sunday, pounding out 17 hits in a 10-4 victory.

Johnny Sewald led the ValleyCats (23-19) with three hits, Cesar Carrasco homered and Brooks Marlow contributed two doubles.

Pat Porter and Dexture McCall also hit doubles.

For the Scrappers (19-21), Nathan Winfrey had three of the team’s 11 hits and scored twice. Juan De La Cruz and Jodd Carter each had two hits.

Casey Shane (1-3) took the pitching loss. He gave up five runs in the four-and-a-third innings he pitched.

Zac Grotz (2-1) was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Chris Murphy in the fourth inning.

In the third inning, Marlow doubled then scored the game’s first run on Antonio Nunez’s sacrifice bunt.

An inning later, the ValleyCats made it 4-0, McCall doubled to score Hector Roa, then scored on Richard Gonzalez’s single. Carrasco came hone on Sewald’s RBI single.

The ValleyCats put the game out of reach in the fifth inning with three more runs. Porter doubled to chase Shane. Roa and McCall greeted reliever Jordan Carter with consecutive singles. With two outs Marlow doubled for a 7-1 lead.

The Scrappers responded with three runs in the sixth inning, with the big blow being Jodd Carter’s two-run homer.
