GREEN, Ohio
A Northeast Ohio city council has voted to save a historic two-room schoolhouse built in 1870.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports that Tuesday, the Green city council authorized spending $215,000 to move the 2,400-square-foot East Liberty Schoolhouse approximately 550 feet to city-owned land on Warner Alley.
The city plans to move the building by early September to make room for a Circle K gas station and convenience store.
Green Mayor Dick Norton says the city hopes to recoup the $35,000 it spent on studies related to saving the schoolhouse by selling it to a private investor.
Akron preservationist John Wolfe said he believed organizations and individuals would be interested in purchasing and preserving the school.
Historic Preservation Commission member Mary Tanner called the structure “significant for the city.”
