Scrappers win, remain hottest team in NYPL

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are the hottest team in the New York-Penn League after a 6-1 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Friday night.

Mahoning Valley is 8-2 in its last 10, and have won four straight. Leandro Linares lasted four innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out four. He walked five, forcing Linares give way to the bullpen. Brock Hartson (3-0) and Matt Esparza combined to go five innings, allowing just two hits, no runs, walking one, and striking out four.

Tri-City (22-18) got its only run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single for Aaron Mizell. Shao-Ching Chiang takes the hill for Mahoning Valley in tonight’s game at 7 p.m.

Roth Brothers get first win in Colt Zone play

Greensboro, N.C.

The Roth Brothers 16-U baseball team got their first win in the five team Colt Zone tournament at Stoner-White Field in Greensboro, N.C.

They defeated the Blue Angels (Brooklyn, NY) 5-4, thanks to a four-run second inning. Roth was led offensively by Chris Patton, who went 2-for-4, with two runs scored and two RBIs. Also for Roth, Chris Gerberry had a single, double and scored a run.

After NY tied the game in the fourth inning, Chayne Cefalde had an RBI single, which turned out to be the game-winner. Dylan Dickey pitched two innings for a no decision. Dakota Bingham got the victory in relief, shutting out the Blue Angels. The Roth Brothers play Greensboro (NC) White today at 5:30 p.m. in the winners bracket.

Jewell joins women’s basketball staff at YSU

Teonna Jewell has been named to the position of Director of Basetball Opperations at Youngstown State University.

Jewell, a native of Smithsburg, Maryland, played two seasons at Davis & Elkins after transferring from Hagerstown Community College. She scored 623 points in 55 games (11.3 ppg).

“I am incredibly excited to join the staff at Youngstown State University.” Jewell said. “The program is under the leadership of John Barnes, who has found success at different levels and his staff is moving the YSU program in the right direction. I know there is no better time to join the Penguin Nation. I will be joining great company and I am eager to work with the staff to make a positive impact on the women’s basketball program.”

In Jewell’s four seasons on the bench, Davis & Elkins won 57 games, placed two players on all-conference first teams and had four second team honorees.

“I am very excited to have Teonna join our staff,” Barnes said. “She comes highly recommended and I have no doubt she will be a big contributor to our program.”

YSU creates Pierson scholarship endowment

The Youngstown State University department of intercollegiate athletics announced the creation of the Jack and Peggy Pierson Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund on Friday.

The Jack and Peggy Pierson Scholarship was established in the summer of 2015 by the Pierson family in honor of their father, Jack, a YSU graduate who spent his life educating students in the classroom and on the football field.

This scholarship will be awarded annually to recognize, celebrate and applaud the efforts of a YSU student-athlete who is making a difference. Student-athletes who receive the endowment must maintain a GPA of 2.8 or above and major in Education. Preference for the scholarship will go to Penguin student-athlete from Northeast Ohio or Western Pennsylvania.

Niles to begin selling athletic passes

The Niles athletic department will start selling athletic passes on Thursday. Passes can be purchased in the athletic office located at the high school. The office will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
