Scrappers explode in 1st, win fifth straight

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers won their fifth straight game Saturday night, 7-4, over the Tri-City ValleyCats at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
The Scrappers (19-20) are now alone in third place in the Pinckney Division standings after wining eight of their last 10.
ValleyCats (22-19) starter Zac Person didn’t last more than 15 minutes after giving up five runs in the first inning. Jodd Carter singled. Ka’ai Tom singled to left to score Carter. Tom later scored on a Daniel Salters single. Salters scored on a double for Connor Marabell. Marabell and Nate Winfrey (walk) scored on a two-run double for Juan De La Cruz. Yeyfry Del Rosario came in to face Silento Sayles as the last batter in the first, and struck him out.
Shao-Ching Chiang (3-1) earned the win. He had a rough outing, giving up eight hits and four runs, while striking out four in five innings. Yoiber Marquina earned his third save of the season.
The Scrappers look for their first three-game sweep of the season, and an undefeated road trip, today at 5 p.m. Casey Shane will get the start.
Steelers trade pick for DB Brandon Boykin
LATROBE, PA.
Pittsburgh is upgrading its defensive backfield by trading a conditional fifth-round 2016 pick for Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Brandon Boykin, the Steelers announced Saturday night.
The 5-foot-10 Boykin, a fourth-round 2012 pick, has played in 48 games and recorded seven interceptions and 32 pass breakups. He will report to St. Vincent College, the Steelers’ training camp site, on Sunday.
The fifth-round pick the Steelers are sending the Eagles can turn into a fourth-rounder based on playing time. With second-round pick Senquez Golson out with an injury, the Steelers are adding depth at cornerback.
HOF: Seau’s daughter to speak in interview

The Pro Football Hall of Fame will allow Junior Seau’s daughter to speak in an interview after his bust is unveiled next weekend.
“Sydney will be given a chance to share thoughts about her father immediately following the unveiling of his bronzed bust,” the Hall of Fame said Saturday night in a statement. “The unveiling, which typically features just the presenter and enshrinee, will include Sydney and Junior’s three sons. Her remarks will be live and onstage in a fashion similar to interviews of returning Hall of Famers.”
Howland girl wins U.S. golf championship

Gianna Clemente, 7, of Howland won the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship at Midland Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.
She shot 37-33-32 and was 6-under par in three rounds. She beat the field by eight shots.
Poland football tickets on sale this month

The Poland High School Athletic Department announced football tickets for the upcoming season will be on sale this month.
Current reserved season ticket holders may pick up their tickets and parking passes in the high school Athletic Office from Aug. 10 to Aug. 14.
Anyone wishing to become a reserved season ticket holder may purchase tickets starting on August 17 to Aug. 26. The athletic office will be selling general admission tickets beginning Aug. 24.
