Police have suspect in custody in latest homicide

YOUNGSTOWN

One of two juveniles who are suspects in the Sunday night shooting death of a man whose body was found at a South Side intersection was arrested Friday.

Sgt. Rick Spotleson, a Youngstown police detective, said he did not want to name the juvenile who is in custody until police arrest the other suspect.

The two are accused in the slaying of Jarrel Brown, 18, of East LaClede Avenue, who was found shot to death about 10:15 p.m. Sunday at West Indianola Avenue and Market Street.

Brown was found by a passing motorist, who called 911. Detectives have speculated that Brown was shot somewhere in the area and walked to the intersection and collapsed.

Police used video-surveillance cameras in the area to help their investigation. Spotleson said the footage was helpful as were some witnesses who came forward.

Police have not yet commented on a motive for Brown’s death.

Brown’s brother, Jawuan, was arraigned in municipal court Wednesday on a charge of felonious assault. Police say he went to a home in the 100 block of West Princeton Avenue about 5 p.m. Monday seeking information and then pistol-whipped a man there.

The man’s father stopped Jawuan Brown from beating the man and chased him off with a loaded shotgun. Police said that when Jawuan Brown left, he fired a shot at the home and the homeowner returned fire, hitting Brown. The homeowner was not charged, but Jawuan Brown eventually was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Jawuan Brown is in the Mahoning County jail on $35,000 bond.
