Springfield running back Ryan Kohler signed with the University of Mount Union last Friday.

NFL relinquishing tax-exempt status

The National Football League is giving up its tax-exempt status.

In a letter to team owners, Commissioner Roger Goodell says the league office and its management council will file tax returns as taxable entities for the 2015 fiscal year. Goodell says the NFL has been tax-exempt since 1942, though all 32 teams pay taxes on their income.

Goodell says the change will not alter the function or operation of the league, since all the teams already pay taxes.

Some members of Congress have criticized the NFL, which generates billions in revenue, for being tax-exempt. Goodell says the status has become a “distraction.”

Goodell forwarded the letter to the owners to Congressman Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee.

Dolphins’ Dion Jordan suspended for season

DAVIE, Fla.

The Miami Dolphins say defensive end Dion Jordan has been suspended for the 2015 season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Jordan was previously suspended for six games last season for other violations, and this suspension casts serious doubt on his future with the Dolphins.

He was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, but still hasn’t met the expectations that accompanied being selected so highly and signing a contract worth about $20.6 million.

UFC champ Jones appears in court

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones has made his first court appearance in connection with a hit-and-run that police say left a pregnant woman with a broken arm.

Jones appeared in an Albuquerque court with his lawyer Tuesday and left without speaking to reporters. He is facing a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injuries. Jones was released Monday on a $2,500 bond. A judge did not impose travel restrictions on Jones.

According to police, witnesses said that Jones ran from a crash Sunday that hospitalized a pregnant woman but quickly came back to grab “a large handful of cash” from the car.

SALT LAKE CITY

Gene Fullmer, a former middleweight champion and member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame whose 55 career victories included two wins over Sugar Ray Robinson, has died, his nephew said Tuesday. He was 83.

Fullmer suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia for years and died Monday while fighting a bacterial infection, his nephew Larry Fullmer said.

Fullmer turned pro in 1951 and defeated Robinson in 1957 to win the middleweight title. The two fought four times and Fullmer went 2-1-1. He lost the title in a rematch with Robinson, but regained the vacated title in 1959 by beating Carmen Basilio and defended it seven times.

He was named the Boxing Writers Association of America’s “Fighter of the Year” in 1961. He retired in 1963 with a 55-6-3 record, including 24 knockouts. Fullmer was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991.
