Robert Dennick Joki has a knack for taking classic stories and making them his own. In addition to his myriad original scripts, he’s put his own spin on Greek tragedies, the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and, most recently, the story of Lady Godiva.

Joki’s “Godiva, A Burlesque Musical,” the latest production at the Rust Belt Theater Company, takes inspiration from the centuries-old tale, but is an original, modern story.

“Godiva” takes place in a small Ohio town, where Amanda Wadsworth has recently left her husband. At first, she merely wants to get a job and make it on her own. But in the end, she stops an abusive man and empowers the women in her town.

The musical is packed with brilliant original songs by Joki and Josh Taylor, hilarious dialogue, touching moments and beautiful choreography by Marisa Zamary. The quick-pacing, short scenes and rapid delivery by the actors keep the play moving over its three-hour span. The mostly upbeat, up-tempo songs and multiple subplots culminate in a moving finale.

Cast members turn in uniformly strong performances.

Zamary, the choreographer, also played Amanda and was perfect in this lead role. Her husky voice and confident delivery brought her character to life.

As Daphne, Lynn Sabeh was quick-witted and clever, and occasionally a very funny drunk.

Nicole Zayas was delightful as sweet and sassy bakery owner Patty Cakes, and Katie Morris was adorable as Kelly, the cute, peppy friend from high school.

Amanda Baker wowed as burlesque dancer Backdoor Betty, and Kage Coven was fabulous as MC Percy St. Pursefull. Bernadette Lim was a very sultry Medusa, while Rachel Clifford and Donnette Bishop earned laughs as ditzy twins Mindy and Cindy.

David Cirelli’s Richard was cool and menacing, while Madison Gulfo was sweet and smart as daughter Willow. Celena Coven was hilarious as Agnes, Amanda’s agoraphobic former mother-in-law.

Completing the ensemble cast with excellent performances were Kim Voeks, Jake Sabeh, Erica Perna, Michaela Shaffer, Cassie Wirtz, Hunter Thomas and Aedan Hnida.

“Godiva” continues May 1, 2, 8 and 9 at 8 p.m. at Rust Belt Theater in Calvin Center at 755 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. For reservations, call 330-507-2358.
