Great Steps4NF Walk

The Neurofibromatosis Network is having its third annual Great Steps4NF Walk at Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road, on May 16. Participants can register online at www.nfnetwork.org.

The event will kick off at 9 a.m. with registration. The walk begins at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is $20 adults ($25 the day of the event); children 4-10, $12, and 3 and under, $6. Participants who register before Thursday are guaranteed an event T-shirt. Walkers can either walk as an individual or as a team, and each individual raising $100 or more for the event will have the registration fee waived.

The Great Steps4NF Walk benefits the disorder by raising awareness and funds for research. NF research is aimed at identifying a treatment and cure for this genetic, progressive nervous system disorder.

Fitness, safety fair

The Mahoning Valley Healthy Kids Coalition will host an interactive Fitness and Safety Fair at the Southern Park Mall concourse May 16 and at Eastwood Mall on June 6.

Activities will include jump rope and hula-hoop challenges, a nutrition “wheel of future” game, bicycle safety course, texting and driving simulator, and the opportunity to sit in emergency services vehicles. Participating children will win free prizes.

Other highlights include a car-seat raffle, pedometer giveaways, BMI charts from the county health departments, story time with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley community program opportunities.

Recognized for savings

YOUNGSTOWN

Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, will receive the Ohio Hospital Association’s top award for environmental leadership, the John Chapman Award, on June 9 during OHA’s annual meeting in Columbus.

The John Chapman Award recognizes one hospital or health care system each year for outstanding achievements in reducing the organization’s ecological footprint. Over the past six years, Mercy Health Youngstown has implemented a wide range of programs and practices that save water and energy, reduce waste, promote recycling, prevent hazardous materials from being landfilled, reduce emissions and increase access to healthful foods, especially in food deserts.
