NAACP chapter plans scholarship benefit

YOUNGSTOWN

NAACP Youngstown Chapter Unit 3207 will sponsor a scholarship fundraiser from noon to 5 p.m. May 9 at the McGuffey Center, 1649 Jacobs Road. Admission is free.

The event will feature a community marketplace, area vendors and businesses, silent auctions and door prizes.

Box lunches will cost $5 each, and soft drinks and water will be $1 each.

Music and memory workshop is set

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University gerontology department and District 11 Area Agency on Aging will sponsor a Music and Memory Workshop at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Williamson College of Business Auditorium.

Alive Inside! is the story of the impact of personalized music play lists on age-associated memory loss patients.

Learn how patients regain a sense of self and connection to those around them with the power of music played on new or used iPods donated to the program.

An iPod drive will begin at this event. Old devices are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

Classes in French are being offered

A 90-minute crash course in French will be offered to those planning to visit a French-speaking country.

A six-week course in conversational French for beginners also is available.

Service program is for college students

Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown announce opportunities for college students in its Service Learning Program.

Students 18 and older can serve at the following locations: Beatitude House/House of Blessing, housing for homeless women and children; Parkside Health Care Center of Columbiana, a skilled-nursing care facility; Motherhouse Health Care, serving older sisters; Potters’ Wheel/Hispanic Outreach, ESL and computer tutoring for adults, and after-school programs for children; Dorothy Day House, feeding and helping the poor; Casa Madre, HIV/AIDS ministry for children; HIV/AIDS Clinic, available only to medical students; and SCOPE, a meeting place for mobile senior citizens.

Ministry schedules Spring Hat Luncheon

The Hospitality Ministry of New Bethel Baptist Church will host a Spring Hat Extravaganza Luncheon at noon May 2 at McMenamy’s Banquet Center, 325 Youngstown-Warren Road.

The donation is $20. Featured will be guest speaker Evangelist Krista M. Tyson of Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church.

Chamber plans after-hours event

Chamber Ambassadors of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce announce an invitation to a business after hours from 5 to 7 p.m. May 6 hosted by Salem Community Theatre, 490 E. State St.

The evening will include a tour of the theater, an opportunity to network with Chamber members and guests and appetizers and beverages.
