Penguins tied for first in Horizon tournament

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.

The Youngstown State women’s golf team is tied for first place with Oakland following the first round at the Horizon League Championships on Friday at the Mission Inn Resort.

After the first day, YSU and Oakland have distanced themselves from the field and it will be a showdown between the two schools for the title.

On Friday, both schools carded opening rounds of 308 and have a 16-stroke lead on third place Cleveland State (324). Green Bay is fourth with a 327, Valparaiso is fifth with a 334, UIC is sixth with a 336 and Detroit is seventh with a 337.

Dixon led the way with a four-over par 75 and is tied for third place. She had a solid back nine with birdies at 12 and 14 and shot an even-par 37. She was one-under par to open her round after a birdie at No. 2. She finished the front side with a three-over 38.

Mitzel finished with a 77 in a round that featured nine bogeys, four birdies and five pars and sits in eighth place. She was two-over par on the front side with a 37 and before carding a 40 on the back nine.

Rohanna carded an opening round 78 highlighted by one-over par round on the back nine and is tied for ninth. After carding a 40 on the front side, she had a pair of bogeys before a birdie on 18 and finishing with a one-over par performance on the back nine.

Merling is tied for ninth with Rohanna after also carding a 78. She had a strong final nine holes carding a one-under par 38 to offset a five-over par 40 on the front nine. On the back nine she had six pars, two bogeys and birdied No. 12.

Both Rohanna and Merling battled food poisoning during their rounds according to Head Coach Nate Miklos.

In her conference debut, Shutt was one-under through the first four holes and had a two-over on the front side. On the back she battled to a 43 and had an 80 for her round. Shutt is in 11th after her first round.

TRACK AND FIELD

Rupe, Morales perform well at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA

Youngstown State had a strong contingent compete at the Penn Relays on Thursday and Friday. Highlighting the event for YSU was a second-place finish by Eric Rupe in the steeplechase and a fifth-place performance by Arnaldo Morales in the high jump.

Rupe took second in the College 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:03.20 while McLean placed 10th at 9:08.36 on Thursday. It was a season-best time in the event for Rupe.

Morales cleared a height of 2.04 meters in the high jump to place fifth.

Ryan Sullivan ran a time of 14:48.67 in the Olympic Development 5,000 on Thursday night. Sullivan placed 14th out of 37 runners with a career-best time in the event.

Also on Thursday in the 400 hurdles, Jennifer Shiley had a time of 1:02.79 while Taylor McDonald clocked in at 1:05.16.

The women’s 4x100 relay squad of Savannah Osborne, Taylor Thompkins, Destiny Hall and Nina Grambling posted a time of 48.09 seconds. The men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Leighton Antonio, I’tavious Harvin, Dalyn Gattison and Carl Zallow posted a time of 42.53 seconds. n the women’s 4x200-meter relay Grambling, McDonald, Hall and Shiley had a time of 1:40.33.

In the long jump, Ellie Pollock had a leap of 5.37m (17-7.5) while Osborne jumped 5.12m (16-9.75). In the triple jump, Pollock had a jump of 11.02 meters while Osborne leaped 10.95 meters.

Penguins in fifth place in Horizon tournament

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.

The Youngstown State men’s golf team is in fifth place after the opening round of the Horizon League Championships on Friday at the Mission Inn Resort. The Penguins shot an opening-round 310.

Leading the event after the first round is Cleveland State who had a 293 while Oakland is one shot back with a 294. In third place is Wright State at 305, Valparaiso is fourth with a 306 and YSU is fifth. Green Bay is in sixth place while Detroit rounds out the field in seventh.

In the individual standings, Bill Gaffney is 10th with a 75, Bryan Yeo is 12th with a 76, Brandon Pluchinsky is 22nd with a 79, D.J. Holub is 26th with an 80 and Steven Sveda carded an 82 and sits in 30th place.

Gaffney had a strong back nine with a one-under par 36 thanks to three birdies. Gaffney birdied 10, 14 and 17 on the back nine after birding one and nine on the front side.

Yeo rebounded from a double-bogey on one to finish with a five-over par round. Following a 39 on the front side, he had an even-par 37 on the back nine that featured birdies on 14 and 15.

Pluchinsky was three over on the front nine and four over on the back side for his round.

Holub had a birdie on eight and 13 to highlight his round. He was even on his back nine through seven holes before a bogey and double bogey gave him a 40.

In making his Horizon League Championships debut, Sveda was at three-over par through 15 holes before double bogeys on the last three holes gave him an 82. He had birdies on two and 14.

MEN’S TENNIS

UIC defeats YSU in HL Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team fought back against UIC during the singles portion of their Horizon League quarterfinal match, but the Penguins came up just short losing 4-3 to the Flames at the Purdue Schwartz Tennis Center.

The Flames quickly earned the doubles point with 6-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 before the hot-contested singles action started. Five of the six singles matches went five sets.

UIC went up 2-0 in the match as Carl Hedstrom beat Bassem El Mekawi 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 in the only match that didn’t go three sets.

Senior Silviu Mistreanu picked up the first point of the match for YSU with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mitch Granger at No. 4.

Like Mistreanu, Kabli dropped his first set 6-3 to Maurizio Feoli before regrouping to win the next two and tie the match. Kabli won the second 6-4 and the third 6-1.

UIC went ahead 3-2 when Issac Lloveras beat Remi Chancerel 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 1.
