YSU, Green Bay split doubleheader

The Youngstown State softball team took game two of a doubleheader 6-1 from Green Bay on Friday at the YSU Softball Complex. The Penguins lost game one 8-4.

In game two, senior pitcher Kayla Haslett tossed a complete game allowing just one run while scattering seven hits. Haslett struck out three and walked none while throwing an efficient 85 pitches in the outing.

The Penguins (16-26 overall and 7-9 in the Horizon League) banged out 12 hits in the contest as Sarah Dowd led the way with three. Dowd also knocked in two runs and scored. Cali Mikovich belted a two-run homer and Maria Lacatena added a solo shot. A solo home run by Miranda Spangberg accounted for the lone run for Green Bay (15-22, 7-9) in the contest.

In the first inning, Dowd singled and after advancing to third on Brittney Moffatt double came home on a groundout by Miranda Castiglione.

With one out in the second inning, Lacatena homered to dead centerfield to put the Penguins ahead 2-0. Later, a Dowd double scored Hannah Lucas.

Mikovich hit her sixth home run with two outs in the fifth. She drilled a 1-2 offering over the right-field fence as the Penguins went ahead 5-0.

In the sixth, Spangberg homered with two outs for the sole Green Bay run. YSU answered in the bottom of the inning when Dowd singled home Alexis Roach.

In game one, Green Bay jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Penguins scored twice in the third as Moffatt singled home Dowd and and scored on a hit by Alex Gibson.

In the fifth, YSU crept within 6-4 when Moffatt blasted her first home run to right-center and Haslett had a pinch-hit RBI single. But Green Bay reliever Briana Cavin came on to with the tying at second and was able to get out of the jam.

The Phoenix added runs in the sixth and seventh inning for the final outcome. Green Bay belted three homers in game one.

The Penguins and Phoenix conclude the three-game series at 11 a.m. today.
