Canfield High School Seniors Amy Goddard and Alyssa Kerensky have fulfilled all of the requirements to be recognized as National Merit Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

In September, Goddard and Kerensky were chosen as two of 16,000 semifinalists out of the 1,500,000 entrants. As a result, they will be in contention for one of 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about 33 million dollar to be offered later this spring.

The program is highly competitive and recognizes students who demonstrate exemplary academic ability on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in the areas of critical reading, mathematics and writing.

In the fall, Kerensky will be attending the Ohio State University on the Morrill Distinction Scholarship where she will study neuroscience and hopes to eventually work in the field of neurological research. In addition to her academic success, she has been a section leader in the marching band and currently serves as the Vice President of the Canfield High School speech and debate team.

Goddard will be attending the Illinois Institute of Technology on the Camras Scholarship where she will study biomedical engineering. She has career aspirations of becoming a researcher in the biomedical field with an interest in stem cell research. She is currently the president of the Canfield Players and has been an active participant in the Canfield High School choirs, Leo’s Club and cross country team.
