Dr. Kathy Padgitt spoke at the Poland library on March 26 in light of Colon and Rectal Cancer Awareness Month coming to a close. Her lecture was called Colon Cancer Prevention.

Included in the lecture was stress on proper screenings and unhealthy practices that are hurting the chances of fulfilling a healthy life in regards to those specific organs.

Padgitt said she intended to take an integrative medicinal approach during this lecture.

“We talk things you can do above and beyond pharmaceutical, day to day with things you can do with food, spices and supplements that really help to reduce your risk of colon cancer,” Padgitt said.

Padgitt started doing lectures like this one in the spring of 2012. She is a nephrologist, a high blood pressure specialist, part of The Kidney Group, Inc. and runs The Center for Lifestyle Change in Boardman. Having much background in the field, Padgitt equipped her presentation with common myths, facts little known by the public and risk rates broken down by merely doing or not doing everyday practices.

“I just want people to know that there are things you can do besides take pills,” Padgitt said. “You really have the power to control your own health.”

Pagditt reminds those attending her lecture not to take all of the information about integrative medicinal practices to replace their current medications, but to use these as well for a healthier life in general. She targeted foods and exercises that help keep the specific organs healthy.

“It’s as easy as what you put in your kitchen,” Padgitt said. “It’s that simple. It’s so simple that that’s why I think people find it difficult.”
