Virginia man shot at Ohio truck stop sues Ohio patrol

COLUMBUS (AP) — A man shot by teen murder suspects at a central Ohio truck stop after a trooper dropped the teens there has sued the Ohio State Highway Patrol alleging negligence.

William Rudd of Herndon, Va., also sued the trooper and a dispatcher in Ohio’s Court of Claims. The trooper picked up the teens — sought and later convicted in a store clerk’s slaying — when their car ran out of gas in 2013.

Rudd alleges the trooper’s failure to check for weapons and the dispatcher’s failure to communicate that the teens were wanted resulted in Rudd being shot in the jaw. He seeks damages of at least $25,000.

The spokesman says the patrol and dispatcher can’t comment on a pending lawsuit.
