Eastern Michigan sweeps YSU softball

YPSILANTI, MICH.

Sarah Dowd and Alexandria Gibson had solid days at the plate but the Youngstown State softball team couldn’t solve Eastern Michigan, falling in a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday.

Dowd had three hits and a RBI for the Penguins in the opener, a 5-4 loss.

Youngstown State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, then scored twice more to tie the game at four in the fourth inning.

But Eastern Michigan scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and held the Penguins scoreless the rest of the way.

YSU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh before Alyssa Huntley (3-1) struck out the final two batters of the inning for Eastern Michigan (15-25), which surpassed its win total from last season.

Kayla Haslett (3-9) gave up five runs (four earned) on 11 hits with two strikeouts and no walks for YSU.

Brittney Moffatt had three hits and scored a run and Gibson had two hits and a RBI.

In the nightcap, YSU scored seven runs in the first two innings but couldn’t hold the lead, falling 12-10.

Dowd had two hits and scored two runs while Miranda Castiglione had two hits, including a double, two runs and three RBIs.

Gibson added three hits, two RBIs and a run while Cali Mikovich had two RBIs for the Penguins (16-25), who will host Green Bay in a three-game series beginning today.

Caitlyn Minney gave up 10 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits in five innings and Ashley Koziol (7-8) got the loss, giving up two runs (neither earned) on no hits and three walks.
