Police arrested a man they say entered several unlocked cars overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday and stole GPS systems, tablets and money.

Jay Weston, who police said is homeless, was arraigned in Struthers Municipal Court on Wednesday on charges of possession of drug-abuse instruments and receiving stolen property. He also was arraigned for failing to appear on drug charges. Police had a warrant for him when the midnight-turn officer found him at the Camelot Trailer Park on Main Street with a backpack that had syringes and the stolen property in it, a police report says.

Police still have more property to identify, and they ask anyone who has property missing from their vehicle to call the department at 330-542-2846. lia.

Police probe break-in

Police responded to a home on Sanderson Avenue to investigate a break-in Tuesday evening.

Police said the home was emitting a strong odor of natural gas. The fire department was summoned and cleared the gas from the home and the valve was turned off.

Police found an undetermined amount of copper pipe and black gas pipe were removed from the house.

The family informed police they were last at the residence Sunday, and found the rear door open when they returned Tuesday.

Teen-driver education

A teen driver-education program will be at Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Tire Rack Street Survival teaches teenagers skills to be safe behind the wheel through hands-on experiences in real-world driving situations.

Students will get a brief classroom session, then participate in activities in a controlled environment on an advanced driving course.

Earth Day Clean Up

Community Concerned Citizens II is sponsoring its 15th annual Earth Day Clean Up starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Cleanup participants will meet at Quinby Park at the corner of Austin Avenue and Oak Street.

All are welcome to attend and participate. Participants are urged to wear clothes conducive to the cleanup work and to bring rakes, weed trimmers, shovels, blowers, wheelbarrows and any other appropriate tools.

Wine for Hope event

The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is announcing a Wine for Hope event to take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Antone’s Banquet Centre, 8578 Market St.

Jack Gocala Sr., retired police chief at Youngstown State University, is the recipient of the Honorary Chairman & H.O.P.E. Award for Lifetime Achievement.

The event will include wine-tasting, gourmet food stations, jewelry, music, raffles, a silent auction and entertainment by Simply Ed Productions.

Proceeds benefit chronically and terminally ill children of the Mahoning Valley.

8th-grade spring show

Boardman middle schools will present an eighth-grade spring concert featuring the Center and Glenwood jazz ensembles at 7 p.m. Friday in the Center Middle School auditorium off Market Street.

The concert will showcase the talent of both band programs, opening with the seventh- and eighth-grade jazz ensembles. It also will include music from the movie “Patton,” a medley of metal songs, songs from “The Phantom of the Opera” and a Meghan Trainor medley.

Tickets cost $3 for adults, $2 for students, and seniors and children under 10 get in for free.

Shot in shoulder

YOUNGSTOWN

Police said they are interviewing a man at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital who drove himself there after he was shot in the shoulder.

The shooting occurred around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday on the South Side.

The man was sitting in a car when someone walked up and shot him.

No other information was available late Wednesday, police said.

2 facing drug charges

YOUNGSTOWN

Police arrested two people at about 1 a.m. Wednesday at a Market Street gas station known for drug activity.

An officer on patrol spotted Katie Poklemba, 30, of Girard, and William Carrol, 26, in a car in the parking lot of a 3200 Market St. gas station that had signs warning about loitering, reports said.

Reports said a knife and bag and pieces of drug paraphernalia were seen by an officer, and Poklemba and Carrol were taken out of the car to be searched.

When Carrol stepped out, there was a bag of suspected crack cocaine on the ground under him, reports said. He was charged with possession of drugs/cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police found two doses of suspected heroin near where Poklemba was sitting, reports said. She faces charges of possession of drugs/heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.
