4th person pleads guilty to role in Winona homicide last summer

YOUNGSTOWN — A fourth person has pleaded guilty today for their role in the death of a 17-year-old on the South Side in August.

Carl Fleeton, 42, pleaded guilty in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court before Judge Lou D’Apolito to charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and aggravated assault.

Sentencing has not been set. Prosecutors are recommending a prison term of seven and a half years while defense attorneys will ask for six years.

Ten others are still awaiting trial for their role in the death of Shawn Cortez, 17, on Aug. 17 on Winona Avenue. Police said Cortez was killed during a brawl between feuding family members.

Trials in the case are expected Monday before Judge D’Apolito.
