YOUNGSTOWN

A man who was critically wounded after being shot in the head on the South Side Friday evening has died.

A news release from the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy was conducted Tuesday on Amos Dothard, 18, of Plazaview Court, which found that Dothard died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Chief of Detectives Capt. Brad Blackburn said coroner’s officials had told him that Dothard was being kept alive by artificial means over the weekend but that he was brain dead because of the nature of his wound. He was shot at the intersection of East Philadelphia and Homestead avenues Friday evening.

Dothard’s death raises the death toll to three people killed over the past weekend.

Xavier Vega, 28, was shot and killed about 5:30 p.m. Friday in a yard on South Jackson Street, and William P. Jones, 55, was killed in a front yard Sunday afternoon on East Princeton Avenue.

The city now has recorded five homicides for 2015. There were 19 homicides in Youngstown in 2014. At this time last year, the city had recorded two homicides.
