Report: RBs coach Brown leaving YSU

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

Ron Brown’s coaching career didn’t last very long at Youngstown State.

According to a report from FootballScoop.com, the running backs coach and associate head coach is leaving the Penguins after three months to coach the wide receivers at Liberty University under former Cornhuskers quarterback/assistant coach Turner Gill.

Liberty is a Christian school in Lynchburg, Va., and competes in the FCS’ Big South Conference. Brown is outspoken about his Christian faith.

Brown spent 24 of the last 28 years as an assistant coach at Nebraska, including the last seven with Bo Pelini, who is now the head coach at YSU.

Pelini did not respond to an interview request on Tuesday.

Brown coached Nebraska’s running backs the last four years, helping Ameer Abdullah finish with 4.588 career yards — second-most in Nebraska history behind Mike Rozier.

Brown was not retained by Mike Riley, who was hired to replace Pelini.

Gill played at Nebraska from 1980-83 and was an assistant coach with the Cornhuskers in 1989 and from 1992-2004.

The Flames (9-5, 4-1) lost to Villanova 29-22 in the second round of this year’s playoffs.
