Manufacturing firm seeks to build world’s largest surfboard
PROVIDENCE, R.I.
A Rhode Island engineering technology and manufacturing company has set out to build the world’s largest surfboard.
WPRO-AM reported that Bristol-based mouldCAM is building the board for the Visit Huntington Beach campaign in California, which hopes to break the world record for the most people to catch a wave on a surfboard.
MouldCAM says the board will be 42 feet long by 11 feet wide and will hold 62 people. The board will be sent to California to be painted and finished before heading to Huntington Beach. Project manager Bob Steel says an aerospace engineer is working with the project to make sure the weight distribution is correct on the day of the ride in mid-June. Sixty-two people must stand on the board for 10 seconds to break the record.
Man kills armadillo; ricochet gunshot hits mother-in-law
LEESBURG, Ga.
Authorities say a south Georgia man shot an armadillo, but ended up accidentally wounding his mother-in-law when the bullet ricocheted off the mammal known for its hard shell.
Lee County Sheriff’s deputies told WALB-TV that 54-year-old Larry McElroy fired his 9mm pistol at the armadillo April 12.
Deputies say the bullet killed the armadillo, but bounced off the animal, hit a fence, went through the back door of the mother-in-law’s mobile home and the recliner in which she was sitting, striking her in the back. McElroy’s 74-year-old mother-in-law, Carol Johnson, suffered injuries described as nonlife-threatening. Lee County sheriff’s investigator Bill Smith said Johnson was walking around and talking afterward.
Lee County deputies say McElroy was about 100 yards away from the home when he shot the armadillo.
Huge metal rooster found in forest after Georgia heist
ATHENS, Ga.
Authorities say the hunt for a 10-foot metal rooster stolen from outside an Athens, Ga., business has ended in a forest, where Rocket the Rusty Roster was discovered under a pile of wood.
Lexington Village owner Bonnie Harris says she’s grateful the sculpture has been found in one piece, but it was missing an eye and his beard was gone. Harris told The Athens Banner-Herald that Rocket will undergo restoration work in the artist’s studio where it was created.
In late March, the 300-pound sculpture was stolen about two weeks after it was installed in front of Harris’ store. Athens Clarke-County police Detective Sgt. Rick Hammond says detectives found the sculpture last Monday down a logging road. No arrests have been made.
