House fire in Salem kills 2; cause probed

A house fire at 537 Franklin Ave. killed two people Sunday morning, the Salem Fire Department said.

The fire occurred at 5:56 a.m. When the fire department got there, the house had partly collapsed, and the houses on each side of it also were on fire, the department said.

Six other departments assisted. The state fire marshal is still investigating to find the cause.

The department would not release the names of the victims or give details about them.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Niles, set for May 1 at Mayor Infante Wellness Center at Waddell Park, 213 Sharkey Drive, will offer something new this year — a 5-K glow run/walk during the relay. The top runners will receive awards, and goody bags are guaranteed to the first 50 registrants. The cost to enter is $20 if by Saturday and $25 after. Runners are invited to register the day of the race. Only cash or check payments will be accepted. Registration will be from 10 to 10:45 p.m. The race will begin at 11 p.m.

Hero nominations

May 1 is the deadline to nominate a local Hometown Hero for the American Red Cross Lake to River Chapter’s fifth-annual Acts of Courage Awards. The heroic act may have happened anywhere, but must have occurred between Jan. 1, 2014, and April 30, 2015.

Nominees must live or work in Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana or Jefferson counties. A judges committee will make the selections in May.

Green Youngstown is sponsoring a tire recycling drive from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. May 2 at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St.

Participants can bring passenger and some commercial-sized tires with or without rims. Some fees may apply.

The event is being funded by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
