Repair work to a downtown building is complete

YOUNGSTOWN

Repairs to the rear of a downtown building, where 100 to 150 square feet of brick fell off the side, are complete.

The work was finished late Thursday at the First Educators Investment Corp. building at 147 W. Federal St.

No one was hurt when the bricks fell off the building, on the corner of West Federal and South Hazel streets, either late Monday or early Tuesday.

Also, several other bricks were dangling from the building after the collapse.

New bricks were put in place where the fallen ones had been.

Because of the repair work, the city closed South Hazel Street, between West Federal and West Boardman streets, and the Market Court alley between West Federal and West Boardman.

The city reopened those streets early Friday.

That section of South Hazel already is partially closed because of improvement work being done to the Wells Building.

The rear of the 105-year-old structure, from which the bricks fell, faces Market Court.

The “rough winter” caused problems with the bricks and mortar, said Charles Shasho, deputy director of the city’s public-works department.

FEIC Financial, a financial-planning business, is located in the building.
